Most Important acidic Substances within a household

Acid can be found in your household Substances. In this post I have show some acidic household Substance with their acidic strength .

Before going to the list of acidic Substances, We must know what actually acid is !!

Acids are the Substance which can easily donate their H+ ions . This statement is only valid for Substance containing Hydrogen(H) then what about other Substance which doesn't contains H+ ions and still acidic..

So here is another statement : " Acid are the Substance which can easily Accept electron pair . They are generally electron deficient species.

Now , Check out some Important Acidic household Substances with their Acidic values .

Shampoo

◆ Lemon / Orange

◆Milk or other dairy products

◆Coca-Cola / Soft drink

◆ Vinegar

◆Phenol

Acidic nature of a Substance can be determined by using pH scale . For a Substance If the pH value is less than 7 then it will be acid , if more than 7 then it will be basic and if exactly 7 then it will be neutral in nature .

Let's see some acidic Substances with their pH value ,

Shampoo - Shampoos have a  pH of about 5.5 .  Acidic nature is due to presence of Citric acid and some other acids in them.

Lemon / Orange - pH of lemon and orange is between  2.5 and 3 . Main component , Citric acid is responsible for their Acidic nature.

Milk and Dairy Products - Milk and Dairy Products like Yoghurt have a pH value of about 6 . Lactic acid is responsible for their acid nature .

Coca - Cola and other soft drinks - Soft drinks have pH between 2.5 and 3 . Carbonic acid is responsible for their Acidic nature.

Vinegar - pH of vinegar changes according to their uses but the most common pH value is about 2 - 3.5 . Acetic acid is responsible for their Acidic nature .

Phenol- Phenol is mostly used as disinfectant has a pH value about 5-6 . They are weak acid .

Stomach acid , Tomato and banana have a pH value 1 , 4.5 and 5 respectively.

So these are some common household Substances with there pH values.

Acidic order of Halogens- hydrogen halides acidc strength

Acids are the substance which can donate  Hydrogen ions in solution or the substance which accept electrons . But now the question is how to know which acid is more acidic and which one is less .    For this you have to understand that Strong acid can easily donate H+ This state is valid for the molecules having Hydrogen atom in their molecules . acidic order/ Strength of halogens ( Hydrogen halides ) Hydrogen halides are the molecules having hydrogen and halide group(Fluorine , Chlorine , Bromine and Iodine ) .Bond length between Hydrogen halides increases down the group due to increase in the size of halide atom .  Increasing order of bond length : HI >HBr >HCl> HF Due to increase in bond length , bond strength become weaker down the group . Order of Bond strength : HF >HCl >HBr> HI It means that Hydrogen Iodide(HI) can easily donate proton ( due to weak bond ) into the solution and therefore it is most acidic hydrogen halide  whereas Flouri...

Types of reaction intermediates in organic chemistry

Intermediate is an unstable compound formed during a chemical reaction . This intermediate is very unstable and get converted  into product as soon as it forms . Reaction intermediate forms in one step of a chemical reaction and get converted into product in the next step .  There are basically four types of reaction intermediates in organic chemistry ◆Carbocation ◆carbanion ◆free radical ◆carbene Carbocation Carbocation is an intermediate in which  carbon atom carries a positive charge . Carbocation is obtained during heterolytic fission.  Heterolytic fission is defined as break down of covalent bond in such a way that more electronegative atom attract  both the electrons . Carbocation is formed when more electronegative atom is directly attached to carbon atom during fission . Carbocations are sp2 hybridized having trigonal planar geometry Stability of carbocation depends on how easily electron density of carbocation can be increased . More the electron donati...
